Here is another thought to get some experience. Go to a boat yard and explain to the owner what you would like to learn, and see if he would hire you for free...and you will work for xx amount of hours no charge, and if he likes what he see's then to hire you. If nothing else you will start to get some experience that you can use.
Now I know this is all predicated on if you have a full time job now and etc. However if you can work on the job, look at it this way. If you go to school you have to pay for it. This way you are not getting paid, but you are not paying out also.
Just trying to throw ideas out...it is a tough market out there now
