letting an engine run out of fuel, before allowing it to sit for an extended period of time,is never a good idea.
a better approach is to run the engine on a "winterize mix",me,i use 5g of fuel,a gallon of oil and a shot of stabil - i run the engine to temp - perform a compression test, service the gear case, pull the wheel, lube all points, then, disconnect the fuel to the engine-connect my mix tank, and run the engine again, with the salt a way flush connected.allow the engine to run till it begins to smoke, run it to temp again, then increase the idle spped, and kill it with the primer - "choke"...
this, puts a fuel/oil mix in the carbs - fuel evaporates, oil doesn't,the inside of the carbs are sealed in a lite coating of 2 stroke oil - eliminating all potential problems...
