Personally why bother-go standup with kidney harness first on up to 80 class gear, and if its a giant like bluefin we get up here and 130 class gear personally, why bother with a chair or stand up pedestal on a small boat, mount a swivel rod holder,make sure its braced down bottom with the optional mount, and glass up some more subsantial backing, and use the backing plate.
make sure it can handle 45 lbs of drag without ripping off a chunk of the boat. thats happened.
lot of work for a chair on a small boat, lot of work for a stand up fighting station as well. its plain more fun on standup, and if you are targeting slobs, a deep drop swivel is how its done up here. get a shortie bent butt for your 50 class gear and drop an extender in the deep swivel. done. best of both worlds.
just lost an estimated >73 tuna on stand up gear last weekend, spinning no less, and its all about a bucket style harness, and the guy on the helm is critical. leader chafed close to boat. and yeah it was a slob.
you better be real confident before you strap into a slob attached to something integral on your boat with 130lb class gear
. and strap a knife on yourself in case you and the chair/station go flying. you will need to be harnessed to the rod even with a station by the way. you are now betting on your engineering work being up to snuff or going over the side attached with a 300lb bluefin+, when you fight the fish of a lifetime, so test first.
a shimano 50W holds tons of spectra at 130 rating and topshot, or slight less with dacron and topshot. in other words none of the fish outside a really giant giant bluefin up here warrant more.
but thats my 2 cents. why bother. are any of those fish really beyond kidney style bucket harness? and if solo, f the chair or station. get a swivel. save the chair for a sportfishing boat and twin diesels.
