Has anyone ever seen someone take one of the old wide consoles and beef it up to take a light console mounted top? It seems like if you could attach the console to the floor in a certain way, and beef the console it could be done. The tubes going all the way to the floor can be a pain on a narrow boat with the wide console, even on a narrow console it would be nice to have as much space as possible.
Bly, how well do you think that carbon fiber tubing would do if you wanted to make your own top, with a canopy maybe 4" wider on each side of an old wide console?
I'm kinda surprised about what some say about sailing in a 20' SC, while the ones I've been on don't blow like a leaf from it, it definitely can change a drift and how it performs underway on some days. There's definitely some wind resistance. That wouldn't make my decision anyway. I have to agree it's tough to have a boat way south without a top if you put a lot if time in, up here it's preference for most people ihmo. No matter where you live or your tolerance of the sun, a t-top has some great advantages, definitely more pros than cons when they are thought out well.
