I'm with the dog on this one. I wouldn't make any assumptions about the transom based on that plate. A large transom plate is a red flag, but this one's not big enough to fix transom flex, just big enough to spread the load of the engine mounting bolts (assuming it extends to the inside of the transom). Hop on the lower unit and bounce to see if the transom has flex. Check for soft spots in the deck and the forward part of the cap. If these things check out, and the engine is good, it's probably worth the price.
