You are correct, the transducer will not affect the engine. It's only a 1/4" deep. Mine is centered on the first step from the keel, starboard side, just about 8" in front of the bait well. In your case I'm assuming the bait well is not going to be there. Install close to the transom where it will be out of the way in the bilge, you know, like if you need to step down into the bilge you do not want to step on the transducer or cables. Take your time when installing, it's a one time, get it perfect deal. Good luck!
