Don, you're right, those old V-2 compressors would shake and rattle but they were bulletproof and would run forever. Bet you didn't know they used that SAME compressor in the home A/C units! I've been thru the Chrysler Airtemp plant in Dayton and was amazed to see them putting that same compressor, driven by an electric motor, inside a hermetically sealed can and installed in the 2-3 ton package units just like the one originally in my house! Most folks don't realize how much capacity is in a car ac unit, but a full size car is typically at least 3 tons or more! (Big heat load + no insulation = big cooling requirement!)
