Default Scupper drain wood boxes

Guys,

I have read many posts on the replacement of a vertical thru hull scupper drain. So i dont want to be redundant but i have a question on the wood boxes which I've also read the thru hulls are embedded and hollowed thru. I dont seem to have a wood box and I can see foam in between the stringer and the fiberglass cylinder which is supported and packed thick with fiberglass surrounding the thru hull

I recently found water intrusion and a leak around this cylinder with chipped and peeled epoxy at the base of it. I do not see any wood box which i have read about. I plan to pull and replace old scupper drain with new one as soon as i find the tool and have the time.

Has anyone seen or heard of the thru hull wood box not existing? Any ideas on what to do if they do not there? I will upload pics of this next time I go to the boat.

Thanks in advance for any input,

GR
