I also have a squirrel problem every year, just before winter. They usually get in to the cabin dry storage to starboard, through the hole in the bulkhead that the wires run through. Visually, the wires that I can see are ok but I'm hoping they haven't chewed up what I can't see. The nests are usually the size of a basketball!
Last year I put the cat in the boat for a few hours to flush them out, However, I think once you remove their nest, and they realize they have to rebuild their winter home, they do some more careful thinking on where they will do it. Anytime I have removed a nest, and checked a few days/weeks later, they didn't rebuild. Hopefully my theory is correct in your case, Capt. Chuck.
