If I remember correctly the grid system you talk about was made in a mold then tabbed to the boats hull. That explains why it has gel coat covering it. That was the first coat in the mold before the lay up. I remember reading about the grid system and how Carl was the first to use this in a boat and think today there is still a ton of grids use in boats manufactured today! What an inventor. He was a smart smart man...
