I was in the market to do this with a 1992 9.9 that someone gave me. I pulled the lower unit and jury rigged a freshwater feed to make sure the motor ran well. Once I pulled the lower unit off, I realized how bad the corrosion was around the impeller pump housing and underneath - and how bad the wear was on the shaft, bearings etc - so I found a perfect one on eBay - for $125. Runs like a top. All the parts to replace my existing lower unit was ridiculous.
If all comes apart easily, it's not a bad job, but I guarantee you that you will run into a problem with at least one bolt or the bearing will be next t o impossible to get out and then it's a PITA…
One trick I did learn was to put a torch on trouble nuts/bolts, or corroded pressed in parts - heat it HOT !!! then douse in cold water. It breaks the corrosion a bit. Take your time.
I have the motor but no boat to put it on. I have a line a 14' LUND just don't know if the 'lil 9.9 will push her well enough...
Good luck.
