I took a look at the gunnel today. It's not flat on the underside, so there's a new twist.
As far as the mounting plates go, I'll go with stainless and tack the nuts to the bottom of the plate. I'll then fab them to be in a "U" shape and slide them in through the hole for the rod holder.
I really want them back by the stern cleats, but looks like they will need to go forward of the existing rod holders.
Next plan is to figure out where to store the bent butt rods when underway.
