Your rite about the bracket thing, not so good on 20's... This coming from a guy with at bracketed 20. It can be done and ride ok but it takes balance and attention to other things to get it right. It is not a throw it on there and go thing. Spot on getting a quote from Hermco tho. I don't personally know him but I have read, seen, and been told about how good his work is. If you are not up to the repair get him to do a transom replacement and fix the damage and ride. No bracket will probably knock a 1/3 off the cost to fix it and you will have something much more special when done than just buying another new style production boat.
