I only had my 4 stroke about 6 months, when my friend was driving onto my trailer. Everything was fine, until he tilted the motor and he forgot to unlatch the bottom section of the teak door. Luckily, the latches broke before it did too much damage to the motor cowling.
I decided to make an inexpensive door and bungee strap the bottom half, so it would flex in case the motor went too high again. The top half slides in and its hard to forget it.
I also had the original hatch glassed in and put one where I could get to it.
Most of the time, I don't bother to put top portion up (it hangs on bottom portion). Motor still carries scar from old door.
