In my opinion a lining is good. It kills some of the sound if you drop a shell when duck hunting or putting weight on a bass rig. I've used the wall mart line (Duple Color I think is the brand name) on scouts, old blazers and aluminum boats a few times with good success. But I honestly do not remember paying attention it keeping water out on the boats. Just the idea of reducing corrosion and wear and being a bit quieter.

I rolled the wall mart stuff.
