I haven't really needed it so far. The kicker can be set for any thrust direction and locked in that position. From there I can steer the boat with the 1/0 drive. This works fine when its reasonably calm, not sure how it would work if it was really nasty. If I had to steer from the stern, it quick and very positive. The kicker controls the boat real well.

This is exactly what i would do. Yamaha 9.9 High Thrust Kicker. Had one on my Formula 233, Seacraft 20' and Now Seacraft 23' Sceptre. Will have all the low end torque and power you will ever need. Run forever. Would suggest the Electric Start and Electric Tilt, Here on the West coast 90% of the boats under 26' run this exact kicker motor.
Cant Recommend enough if a guy is going the Kicker Route. By the way your project is coming along Nicely, Very Good Work and Watching Your Build Closely. Thanks for taking the time to share.
