I mounted mine higher due to my raised deck and where the bolt holes would come thru on the transom. I can't remember how much but it was at least 1 or 2". This worked out very good for me as others have complained they can't get their single 30" motor high enough. Even with raising my bracket higher my motor is mounted on the second to last hole from the highest setting. If you are going with a single motor I would highly advise you go up at least 1.5" higher than the instructions say. The pic below was before I moved the motor up.
