That's what I did when I restored my 18 footer.
The leaning post that came with it was way too high, so I had a local welder shorten it by about 6 inches.
It worked fine for the 5 years I owned her.
In retrospect I probably could have lowered it another 6" as well. I wouldn't have minded it a little more "seat" and a little less "lean".
A little shorter would also have accommodated the wife a bit better.

I had the welder cut it so the footrest would still work. If I had gone shorter it would have removed the footrest, but if it was shorter I probably wouldn't have needed it anyway.
Hmm...

Anyway, solution was to eventually upgrade to a 23 Sceptre with Pompanette Captains chairs.
