Default 20' sceptre fuel hatch

The fuel tank cover was saturated with years or brackish water I removed roving woven and mat to find that all the plywood was 6" x 6" squares must have been built on a Friday I got this boat from the original owner and hatch was never rebuilt no wonder it was spongy hope the transom wasn't built the same way. I think I'm going to go with stainless or alum diamond tread on the fuel hatch any thoughts. I work in a large shipyard so I can get the plate at no cost.
