Default 250 HPDI or 300 HPDI

I am in the process of repowering a late 90's 23' center console. I am torn between the 250 HPDI and the 300 HPDI. The price difference is minimal and the 300 uses aprox. 20% more fuel than the 250. Anyone have any performance numbers for a similar setup. Also I have heard rumors that the 300 HPDI is not actually 300hp but more like 280, has anyone heard the same thing.

Thanks for your help.

well, let's see.....I think you may have answered your own question: 20% more fuel and 30 additional horsepower? sounds like an easy decision to me but I'm not the one needing an engine.

Is the 250 simply not fast enough??

I have always tried to get as close to the max HP as I could when powering a boat. My senable side says the 250 is fine, but that little voice keeps going get the 300 it is only $1500 more.

Zup,
If you're repowering now, go with the 250. The 300 doesn't have much, if any, of a track record right now so the bugs haven't been worked out yet. Plus that 20% fuel difference, definitely the 250.

Take the $1,500 and money saved on fuel and put it towards some new toys.

Just my two cents on the 225 two stroke from Suzuki...

I know someone who has that engine on a 23 SC and it is a friggin' pig on fuel! I cannot remember exactly what he used in a day of striper fishing, but it made me sit up and take notice. Something like, 40 gallons burned when most of the day they spent drifing eels...! Yikes! Stay AWAY!

On the other hand, once again, I am very happy with the Evinrude 225 I bought new last year.
