Any suggestions on painting an outboard - exterior - not the inside. And where is the best place to get Yammi Grey

BillyBob did a great job on his OMC. I am unsure on a good place to get the grey but I would try an auto paint store and spray it like a car with a few coats of clear???? I think the yamaha/outboard paint is a one part and lacks the luster the OEM paint has when new???
So......you bought a new outboard??? |

That's what I'm thinking and waiting for BillyBob to chime in
New Outboard? You mean new to me? Uh , yep. 91 225 - strong compression, not sure on hours, a little scared of shift shaft though...

Hey John, I just saw this thread.I painted my OMC with the same paint as my cockpit, only I sprayed some rustoleum primer on it first. That was the petit easypoxy and it looks great and held up well, of course it's off white like the cockpit.I screwed around with the Blue/silver omc paint in the spray can and it wouldn't match and it looked lousy and I finally said it's an ugly color anyway, I'm going with the white they paint the new ones white anyway.
But a Yammy's a different story (congrats btw),and you will never be happy with those Tempo spray cans from the marine stores.I would go with Trayders idea, get some auto paint that is a close match and spray the whole thing. You can pick any system you want, but they have a zillion colors, so something has to be a close match.I sprayed my kid's car with PPG Omni, which has a 2-part clear, put something like that on and it'll look good as new Bill |

John,
This is the correct factory paint for Yams. http://www.color-rite.com/ I had that 225 Yam , It's a real screamer 14 1/4 x 17 = 5700-5800 Chris |

John the car paint idea works well and definitely do a base coat clear coat. It really looks nice that way.

Thanks! I just came to the conclusion that the last thing I should do is allow some more milestone creep into this project... Otto will be done with 3 boats before I finnish this one....

I would strongly suggest using 2 part Imron or Imron knockoff. Prep The engine with Zinc primer (the green stuff), a couple of coats are required. Stay away from the spray in a can. You would be suprised how good the engine will look with the proper prep and 2 part paint. Remember to grind any oxidation and with the proper paint the engine will look like you just popped it out of the box. I have gone so far as to paint the powerhead but you must strip all the electrical off. Looks cool!!
