OK all you PolyResin guys .....
Why did I buy a couple of gallons of Isothalic Resin last Fall ??? I was dusting off the supplies ...getting ready to “attack the boat” (well its cold again ) and found two gallons of Iso resin ...amongst the Vinylester resin ... BUT I cant remember why I got those two gallons ... I was thinking it was for some work I was doing in the bilge or to some of the hatches ... not real “structural” work SO before I call the fiberglass guy ....anyone know the properties of this resin (Vinyl vs. Iso)?? ...maybe that will jar my apparently slipping memory ... I recall them suggesting it to me … as an alternative to the more expensive Vinylester that I have been using …. But for what …I have no Idea !!! Guess I was sniffing too much resin last fall !!! Also had some gelcoat and wax additive in the garage over the winter ...the really cold winter .... do you think the temperatures did anything to them ....before I find out the hard way ??? |

Hey Scott-
If my memory serves me correctly, Isothalic resin is the best grade of polyester resins (strength, shrinkage, etc). Many of the top boat builders use isothalic resin. Vinylester resin is considered to be a better quality resin because it resists blisters better and has a higher heat tolerance. Most boat builders only use vinylester resin in engine compartments, or other critical areas because it costs more than isothalic resin. I am not sure what you have left to do on your boat, but I am sure the isothalic resin will work fine. -Ed- Also had some gelcoat and wax additive in the garage over the winter ...the really cold winter .... do you think the temperatures did anything to them ....before I find out the hard way ??? |

Scott-
By the way, I think your boat is probably made with 99% poly resin (lesser quality than the iso), so you should be fine. As far as the gel coat is concerned, if it froze....toss it out. Don't want to have the chance of having it fail on you....plus it looses it chemical properties with age (regardless of temperature) I would think the wax additive would be fine, but if it says protect from freezing on the label....I would toss it too. Don't toss any. Do a test of the gelcoat by adding MEK and see how it cures, and keep the wax additive it will be fine when it thaws out.Wax in wax out...............

Fellow-ship I think your right…..
Ed …Welcome to CSC …. Sorry I had to do that !!!! Where ya been hiding !!!! Glad to see ya back ! Oh yeah… Iso resin …good choice for Flip Flop repair DH …. How are you !!!! glad to see ya …. Anyhow ….Called the Fiberglass gurus and here’s what they told me ….after a good chuckle about my question and my memory loss… Iso : Like Ed said a grade above plain old poly ….and preferred over poly for underwater situations or wet locations …more impervious to water ….good choice for tooling and mold work. So as I eluded to above, that was headed for some layup in the bilge. Vinylester : Also good for water contact and what a lot of builders are claiming to use today (all of our boats are more than likely Polyresin….unless it’s a new one)… The plus with Vinylester resin is its strength …. Forms a very stiff laminate…that plus the water and chemical resistance properties makes it a good choice …which is what was used to re-core the decks . Also bonds very well to poly laminates. The down side is the cost …. Cost was about $14/gallon more than the Iso . The vinylester has been the predominantly used resin on the boat. GelCoat : That was OK …..Temperature didn’t affect the couple of cans I had …. They didn’t feel it would …. If it had wax already in the mix …probably a different story …and Don that’s where I’m headed … to make a test batch Wax add. : They were right again …. Solid block of rubber!!!! Trash …. I asked if I could get it back into solution (warm water bath etc.) said Not a chance … Don ....It dosent look like it will ever go back into solution so I got to find a fresh can of that ....dont think West Marine will have that on their shelf !!! Whew …..Thanks everyone !! And after all this ...The final kicker ... Still a little too cold up here anyhow |
