New to the board w/ 20ft CC

Hello all,
My name is Chris. I am new to the board. My wife and I just bought our first boat. It is a 1973 SeaCraft 20ft CC. It has a 2001 Johnson 150 on it. We took it out for sea trials yesterday and were really impressed. This boat rides nice and solid.

Any advice or things to look forward to would be appriciated.

Seriously, looks like the boat has been reworked at some point - know any of the details?

Congratulations and welcome to the board. My only advice is to get trim tabs. They will help the ride and handling greatly.

As of right now, I am not too sure on the year of the boat.
It does not have the serial numbers on the transom. I am waiting for the title and the hull survey to come back.

The reg numbers got blocked out due to the flash on the camera. They are coming off anyway and a new cleaner set of numbers are back on and futher back on the boat.

I don't think you will have issues with the foam filled glass stringers, but a new raised floor and transom might be in order for a 31 year old hull to get rid of the wet feet

I do know you'll get expert advise from the many 20' owners on this board

Well, I just got off the phone with the hull surveyor. He said that she has a wet transom. He sugested a band-aid type fix. I am not too thrilled with this idea. There is a nice custom fiberglass shop in my area. A lot of people use him and he come highly recomended. What should I be expecting to pay for a complete transome rebuild?

One issue you will have with the transom rebuild is the size of that new motor.

Hear me out a second.

From what I can see that is a 20" inch shaft OB. If you invest the money in a transom rebuild you must go with a 25" transom. The reason for this is "do it right the first time" the last thing you want on an older 20SF is a low transom expecially with that model as the floor is low to begin with. Back in the 70's 20" shaft OB's were the norm. Today it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a 20" shaft.

The kicker with this boat is it seems to have a new(er) 20" shaft 150. what to do......

I would get your purchase price way down, a transom rebuild will cost 2K min ( to have it done right) then buy a 5" extension for your OB approx $750.

Do not pay top dollar for that boat because it has a newer t0top and outboard. Who ever repowered that boat should of redone the transom before slapping a new outboard on it.

You stated you got a survey yet before you said you purchased it?

Surveyed, before purchase yes.
We have a contract to purchase and we were ready to roll on it, and we are renegotiating it now.

I am not sure what we will end up paying for it. The original price was $11k. The contract price was $10k. We are negotiating the repairs right now.
If I had to do a new transom on the boat I had planned to fill it in and add a bracket.

I was not aware of it being a short shaft motor. It is a 2001.

I think you are right about it just being a 20 inch shaft.
