Can anyone explain how a typical saltwater washdown system is set up, and what types of pumps will work. I have an extra 1500 gph pump.
Thanks

1st a bildge pump makes a lousy pump for a washdown. You need a diraphram style pump. I'd suggest a
JABSCO Par-MAX. Stay away from the SHURFLO's. They don't last. Now where are you going to get your water supply? If you have a scoop thru the hull for your livewell pump, then it's easy. Step up to a Dual Port livewell pump. http://www.kodiakmarine.com/thru_hull_bait_pumps.htm they did away with the pix. Darn! Kodiak's new duel port thru hull mounted bait pumps are available in all 4 sizes, K-360 thru K-1100. Here is how they works. The bait pump mounts direct to your shut off valve mounted to your thru hull. The pump comes with a plug in the port, remove the plug screw in a barb fitting and run a hose to your wash down pump to supply it water. Please note that you can only use a diaphragm style wash down pump such as a Flo-Jet or Shur-Flo as the diaphragm allows the bait pump to not suck air through it. The extra port in the Kodiak pump acts as a water source for your wash down pump only and does not put out pressure. That extra port is where you get your water supply for the washdown pump. Use this style of hose to pump it. ![]() |

Warthog,
Do you need a shutoff to shut the baitwell off when you are using the washdown, and vice versa?? Thanks!!

I have one of those 25' Hydra-Coil hoses with a plastic handle grip type nozzle. Works quite well. Since I have not used any other type, I can't tell you whether or not it falls into the whimpy catagory. I think the trick is to mount the pump in the verticle (diaphram down) position The pump has two stages low for the bait circulation and high pressure for the washdown. If I remember, the cost was approx $165 for this model. I also have it in a dry area which helps maintain the longevity. I also hear the Jabsco brand is a good one
