1972 Gulf Coats Newbie

WOW! what a website. I brought home a 1972 20ft yesterday. This will be the first of many posts, with all the of info. from you veterans. I was going to post pics but my camera batteries died, so I'l do this later.
1st..the boat has a 25 inch mercury on a Jack plate the owner said this was necessary due to the depth of the transom. Is there a way to figure out where the motor needs to be on the Jack plate. Or is the plate really necessary.
2nd. there are no id numbers on transom(painted over) are they somewhere else or should I just go lightly with my sanding.I want to make sure they are the same as the title. The number(on the title) is only 4 digits long is this good or bad. Also the title says 19ft.So,Im assuming it is.
3rd Where can I find the specs on this boat?I can't wait to restore it but the motor and mechanics are my first concern.
