Is 140 HP enough for the SC20?

I would consider that range ideal for the SC20. If you like to scream and fly than a 6 cyl 150 HP and up would probably be preferred. I am very content with a 2S 130 HP which I feel has a nice balance of price, speed, engine weight and fuel ecomomy. Many on this board also swear by their 4S 140's.
Good Luck!

I have a V6 150, and I never really use all the power there. I have rigged 20' Seacrafts with as little as 90hp I6 Mercurys, and they ran fine, just not fast. The "standard" power for the 20' Seacraft from the mid 70's through the mid 80's was the venerable 115 hp OB, or 140 hp sterndrive.

My Master Angler 20 originally came with a 115 Evinrude (or maybe it was a 112 SPL....I forget). I'm powering her with a 98 150 Evinrude Oceanpro.

Is it the 60 degree carbed model? If so thats a real light motor, great for a dry deck.

My 20 runs great with a 1980 85 HP Evinrude. I would think 140 is plenty unless you run offshore and/or have fat and/or a lot of friends.

The originals came fitted with inline 150 Mercs, so that should be fine, Otto I'm not sure how you live with 85 my 18 had 115 but that enough. They really need about 150 to really work good, and its not about top end its about how the boat rides at mid range that changes. it just gets up on the chines - hard to describe

I'll agree 140hp is plenty for SC20, and if it's a Zuk 4 stroke you're thinking about, its a great balance of performance and economy. I couldn't be happier with mine!

Good Luck!

When I got my current 20' Seafari, all I had to put on the back was a 1973 105/120 Chrysler. (A 105 with a carb set off a 120). I figured I probably was about 90 hp at the prop. She planed off with no difficulty whatsoever, but had a top speed of under 30 mph, and cruised about 23.

I got caught by a squall one day when I didn't have the speed to outrun it. That's when I went to a 150 Merc.
