I am looking at purchasing a used, low hour, clean motor in the above years. I am an Evinrude guy, however I like Yamaha also. Any input on the reliability of these years or the better of the above years. How about carbed vs EFI pros and cons??? Economy etc. How many hours would be considered high?? haw many hours usually before overhaul?

I am purchasing a 1999 250 Johnson. Has 360 hours, very good condition, includes prop, binnacle controls and all instruments and wiring for $4,000. Motor is pristene. It is coming off a 23 Sceptre and going on the same. The previous owner premixed and I will also do the same. Different motor but some info for your decision making.

I can only really speak for the '02 and more recent. The older ones may be a bit different but, the OX66 Yamahas are one of their most reliable engines. They like gas/oil. The most common maintenance items are: O2 sensor (cleaning usually), low pressure fuel pumps (replace at ~$40 ea.), HP fuel pump screen. I believe 2002 was the first year the digital gauges had the built-in hour meter. About every 100-200 hrs. a good de-carb helps. The oil pump adjustment needs to be checked. They will load up/foul plugs if oil is too heavy especially with a lot of slow trolling/idling. I'm on my second, and have never had any major problems when the above are maintained. Good luck!!

My 250 OX66 w/bracket on the avatar boat gets 2-2.25 mpg........if don't keep it on the pin. That's calculated, no flow meter. Obviously an HPDI or 4S will be better on fuel. The order would be (worst to best) carb., EFI,
4s-HP EFI. IB diesel would probably be best. I know a couple of guys with Yam. 150 4S getting 4-5 mpg on 21' boats. The Yam. OX66 motors are VERY reliable. |
