Default linkage issues with my 225 suzuki 2 stroke

Early the other morning I was getting ready to go out fishing my engine started grinding on it's way from neutral to forward. This promted me to do an investigation and I quickly noticed that my forward and reverse clutch rod was popping off the clutch lever. I could not get the stainless rod and connecter to stay on the cluth lever even by clicking it bact on the shaft. So I ordered a new assembly but I have no idea what to use as a reference to adjust it. I am pretty sure I can disassemble and reassemble correctly but don't know how to adjust it so it's right. Do any of you guys have experience with this situation?
