replacing the deck on my 1970 20 cc, had to dig some foam out to repair the stringers(about a 6" wide channel on inboard stringers) was wondering if it is really worth it to replace the foam or just leave it. Does it have any structural purpose?

Don't replace foam take as much out as you can especially on a boat that old. I have seen foam that is supposed to float taken out of an old formula that the foam itslef actually sunk it was so water logged. Look at all the restore jobs on here everybody takes foam out and leaves the area between stringers foam free. Hope this helps.
