Default Merc controls and wire harness

Hi,
I am looking to repower with a used engine and was trying to get a budget together.
I have a 97 mariner 200 and wanted to go up to a later '99-04' 225-250 Merc.
Will the current wiring harness and controls/box work?
Thanks,
Joe

I'd say yes as long as you don't go with the verado, I think they are all electronic.

hey jobu - did you sell that motor? or blow it up? not sure about opti's, but carb or EFI motors . . . your harness and controls will work.

Hey BigShrimpin...nope and nope. I still have it. It's not running great but It got me throught the summer and fall. I used to get about 37-38mph out of her and now its running about 33 or so on the gps. But it still turns 52-5400 rpm. Compression was between 90 and 100 cold in all six. The only thing I can think was the one piston that the edge "bitten off".
I figured instead of rebuilding and still only having 200hp, I would take a chance at a used 250 for about the same price and go from there.
I am also playing with the idea of a used Pursuit 2460 Denali.
Not exactly the best fishing boat but more accomadating for the family (mostly wifey).
I am planning on doing over the cabin door and hatch, helm and gauges, teak and Awlgrip the topsides.
Hoping to get around $8k of so...What do you think?
It has a Lewmar 700 windlass, Garmin GPS/Fish finder/ Horizon VHF, stainless bow rail and teak pulpit.
thanks joe
