I am currently building a 21ft stitch and glue boat and I wanted to build a bracket suitable for a 115hp to 150hp outboard with a swim platform the entire width of the transom.
This forum has earned the reputation of the place to go for DIY brackets, and I can see why from some of the projects. I had a few questions.. 1. Is standard polyester resin being used? I am familiar epoxy, but I am not sure that is the best to lay up in a mold. 2. How thick does the fiberglass need to be? 3. Is 1708 the preferred fiberglass? 4. Does anyone have the basic dimensions for the "box" or know if plans are available to make a bracket from. I do understand you do not DIY to save money, you DIY to get exactly what you want and the satisfaction of a job well done, not to mention the best labor money can't buy. Thanks, Nick |

Not my design, I might be crazy, but I am not smart enough nor stupid enough to try to build my own design of a stitch in glue boat.
I am using plans from Bateau.com, the C21. It is not 21 inches, it is 21 feet. |

Sorry, the 21" was a typo. What kind of transom construction does the design call for?

Transom is at a 13 degree angle, 3 layers of 1/2" marine ply (Meranti 1088)laminated with thickened epoxy, two layers of 6 oz biax on the outside, 1 on the inside. There are also plenty of overlaps at seams and corners from taping the hull together with 6oz biax.

I would like to use a 115, but the used market is loaded with low hour 150's. I don't plan to get a motor until spring, I hope to be ready by then. I am about to make another supply order, so I was going to add on materials needed for a bracket.

The 115 will work fine. I have plans if you want them. You will need to be able to sew carbon fiber.

You might want to check the boards, ebay, and craigslist. With the boat market in meltdown, there are some brackets to be founnd. If you could find one that would fit correctly for 3-400 bucks, I doubt you could build one for that, and it would be "engineered" correctly.
I thought about building my own, and stummbled across an armstrong for 300 bucks. If your into wanting to build the whole thing yourself, that's a different issue. |
