How high above the water line are your outlets to the scuppers?? and how were you able to access the area to put those PVC pipes in???...

At least in mine between the motor well and those lousy 8" access ports it seems you would either have to do some major cutting to see what you we doing or you had to work in the dark ...so to speak..

Awhile ago we had a post on this very subject...and its something I'm still contemplating...as those brass tubes that pass through the deck and hull are corroding up ...so I need to replace them..just a little concerned about the difficulty of getting the old out and the new in...and making sure they are waterproof..

Seafari...I think you said whaler had long tubes for this??

About 2'' above the water line

The 8'' hole was more than enough room to
work in

1st drill the inner liner out
2nd I took a long drill bit with an
extention and drilled a pilot hole from
the inside through the transom.Then went
outside with the hole saw . The drill bit
in the hole saw will follow the pilot hole.
I did this at the same time when I was
working on getting the water out of the
transom . More air flow to help dry it out.

My tubes were nylon. That didn't matter
because I wanted no part in having those
drains in the deck. I call them sinker
drains because those who left them in found
their boats on the bottom. Besides that if
you take a good wave over the rail; no way
will that water ever get out fast enough.
I like to keep my feet dry. I have fished
in sea's 12' high w/white caps in this 23.
I want the water going out as fast as it
comes in. I don't go out of my way to fish
in crap like that but sometimes you get
caught with your pant's down. It's day's
like that you'll be happy to have those.

Thanks for the follow up...nice job on the boat!!! That forward hatch of yours.. WOW is that PVC pipe stingers you got going there....I dont think that hatch is going to give you any trouble any more

Thank you for the detail on the scuppers...like I said before thats something that bothers me so I might put that on the list....the ever lengthening list of things to do...

Hello Steve, thats exactly what I did to my boat,your right about keeping your feet dry,I hated that water coming in. If someone does this and for what ever reason the holes are below the water line ,Rabud makes a cone ball scupper that works great. When that ball is under water it seals and not a drop comes in. I also wanted to keep it original but this change was for the better.Capt D Reel Smoker.

I had looked at that type before. But at that time I was runnig lobster pot's and
I needed something that would let all the crabs
out [by themselve's]. I was getting very tried
of picking them up and throwing overboard. All
I had before was those 3/4'' brass tubes.
One peice of weed and they were plugged up. So
I sat down and came up with what you see now. I had those on my ox for 18 yr's. They worked so well I put them in my 23. Now when I wash the boat
out there's nothing to pick up all go's out.

yes,anything running straight out the back especially with a bigger diameter will work and you stay dry.I like the cone scuppers because they completly seal but your right sometimes you have a leaf or sea weed go in there and you have to use the hose to blow it out.They make 2 size cone scuppers the big ones work better.Reel Smoker.

IN REGARDS TO THE SCUPPERS FOR THE SELF BAILING I HAVE A 1989 20FT CENTER CONSOLE. THE SCUPPERS GO STRAIGHT OUT THE TRANSOM. IF I DONT KEEP THE PLUGS IN ALL THE TIME WHEN YOUR SITTING WATER COMES IN THE BOAT. IT WAS MANUFACTURED WITH JUST 2 RUBBER FLAPS ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE EXIT SCUPPER HOLES. I WAS WONDERING IF THEY MAKE A FLAP OR DEVICE THAT WILL NOT LET THE WATER COME IN THE BOAT WITH THE PLUGS NOT BEING INSTALLED. ANY INFORMATION ON THIS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Rabud/Dusky makes a scupper cover cone that has a ball inside that seals against the cover when water enters the cone.They call it a Sea Scupper.
