Live Well Worries?

Hello everyone, I am in the restoration process on a 1976 23', The transom was removed and all the wood was Rotten or missing even though the transom did not flex at all with 2 people jumping on the float bracket. My question is this, What changes have any of you made to the transom livewell? It is currently removed, and Now is a prime chance to make it better then before or do they funstion pretty good as they were? I do not like the idea of not draining the well while the boat is in the water and have toyed with the idea of a pump in pump out system. Any ideas at this crucial stage would be appreciated.
