Default 23 sceptre power

i know it's not ideal, but can i get away with a 150 yamaha on a 77 sceptre 23'? what could i expect to get at 4200 rpm? i've met guys with old 23' cc they threw 150's on and they get appx 25 mph cruise

thanks

Our '82 Sceptre had a '89 225 Evinrude that gave it a 24 mph cruise and a 35-36 mph top end (144 gallon fuel tank). Based on the age of the engine and the way HP was rated back then, that engine may have only been putting out 180 HP at the prop, so a newer 150 may not be too far off my figures. However, the 150 may be overburdened trying to push so much boat. At least the 225 had the torque, that 150 won't.

I have a 23’ with a 225 Yamaha on it. If I have 2 people on the boat and put the trim tabs down and engine down I can put her on a plane at around 2800 to 3000 RPM’s So I think you would be able to run her with a 150 (for a little while) the minimum HP now a days is 225 and max is 300 HP. If I were you I would sell or trade the 150 and get the correct size motor for the boat.

thanks, that's surprising about speed w/ a 225, i figured much quicker. i suppose it makes sense, my 20 got 28kts (not mph) with the 150 yam on her and she's appx 1000 lbs lighter.

I get about 30 MPH at 3800- to 4000 RPM’S and about 12-15 MPR more wide open.
