The 115 and the 130 are not much different in power. It is just a personal choice. As you can see, the three 18' boats that I know of on this site go from a 115 up to 175.

I have a 1986 18' SeaCraft that I purchased from a fellow about a year ago. It has a Mercury 200 offshore series engine on it. I have been re-doing the boat for the past year including an engine overhaul (1992 model) so I have yet to test ride the boat. The transom is solid and there is no rot or stress cracks visible and the engine has been operated on the boat by the previous owner for some time. Hopefully the boat doesn't sink when I put it in the water!!

I want a ride ! I would be interested in hearing how the stern sits when you put her back in the water. It must be ok, based on your prior owner's use.

I am considering purchasing this boat without an engine. Does anyone have history on the hull manufacturer prior to going to Mako.
Was this built just as well after the CSY period? The boat was apparently rated for a 150hp, how did the other 18' on the site get the 175 on her? What is the fiberglass and stringer construction? What are anyones recommendations on power? I have heard that the 115 may be underpowered. Are there any standard issues to look for in this model and year? How does the boat ride and plane since I won't get a test ride. Thanks - Striper |

Striper-
I have the 1989 18. Tracker Marine built the boat. I have a 130 Yamaha, my max. horsepower rating is 150-as you mentioned. My father's boat is a 1987 with a 150,his max. horsepower rating is for a 175(I checked the max weight for the boat on the two Spec. plates and the weight issue in the stern for the bigger motor appears to be the reason for the smaller engine rating). As you mentioned, CSY (sailboat CO.)built that era of Seacrafts. I can tell you first hand the boats do not differ much. Same hull design (I'm not sure on stringer and glass details, Trayder could fill you in more) and slightly different hardware. No problems on my boat. I get 38 mph on the GPS. The 115 would be too slow. When I repower, I'm going to the 150 2 cycle for speed -47 mph, price, and weight. Give me your fax # and I will fax you the Potter Era specs on this boat. The info is still accurate to the 1989 for the most part. The boat rides like any nonSeacraft 21 footer. Planes off well.

Hey Snookered-
Could you fax me the info as well? I have a 1978 18'. 828.326.7184, attn. Tom Bare PS: I have a Yamaha 115 on mine now and have had a 135 in the past and although there is a performance difference it is not night and day. I went down to the smaller motor for fuel reasons. The boat used to make a lot of Bahamas trips and I needed the range. TB. |

Tom-
It sounds like you have an extensive experince on the 18'.Where do you leave the coast to the Bahamas(departure point). Do you go with others? What time of year. Are you going to Bimini or Grand Bahama to your arrival point. What is your experience on the 18 handling the trips. PS Faxes went out on Specs to you and Striper

Snookered-
Thanks for the fax! We would leave from Ft. Pierce usually and go to Walker's...102 miles dock to dock. sometimes for fun, sometimes I'd take her over when I was fishing in the BBC As far as the boat goes, I used to work on charter boats down there and I would take the SeaCraft out on commercial trips when the fleet was blown out. Many a time I have had other captains yelling at me on the radio to get my a** back to the dock due to weather and the size of the boat. I was younger and looking back I am certain I would not try to get through the inlet now on some of those days but I gotta tell you it is one hell of a boat. Never had a single problem with her in weather other than a broken windshield from someone hanging onto it. We have a 31' Jupiter with twin 250 Yamis down there now so the "Blackwatch" is up in NC getting ready for the winter bluefin season up here. We have caught a lot of big fish from her and the goal has alwys been to catch a fish bigger than the boat and mount the boat! Told my buddy he isn't going to recognize her with the new block and tackle I'm gonna have to install for the giants!!!! She has a leaning post and T Top, live well, Icom, Furuno, etc. Pretty well rigged for offshore. MY buddy was supposed to go in the "Candy Store" in Ft. Pierce Saturday and pick me up a center rigger but the crook went fishing instead. Imagine that! Anyway, thanks again for the fax, TB. |

TB-
Man, great stories on getting out the max from your 18. Well equiped as you mentioned. I grew up sailing with the folks, crossing from the Palm Beach Inlet to West End and traveling the Abacos. I am looking to make the trip in the 18, but I have to iron-out my motor reliability first. The Jupiter 31 is just stretching it's legs to cross to Walker's Cay I bet!
