When will people understand that a boat HAS to be tied down to the trailer to be safe??!!

It amazes me how many boats you see without tiedown straps. A buddy of mine who routinely tows his boat 40-50 miles one way doesn't use them. Some guys claim that you want the boat to come free of the trailer to prevent further damage/harm to the tow vehicle and its passengers. It seems to me that a lot of the boat-leaving-trailer accidents you see could have been prevented with the use of straps.

If you get excessive torque on the hitch ball, the coupler WILL fail. Tie-downs will not cause the boat to come into the passenger vehicle. Tie-downs will prevent premature separation of boat and trailer, and save a lot of heartache. Unless, of course, you WANT the separation to collect the insurance.

My question is: Where did that thing hit the guard rail?

From this picture it doesn’t seem that the boat is still attached to the Tow Vehicle which could explain much in how it ended up that way.
