Default Rust Stains

Any suggestions for the removal of some rust stains on the inside of my gunwales? One of my spring line cleats bled some rust down. Thanks!

Rust-Aid. Spray it on the rusty area, watch rust disappear, spray off with hose. Total job time: about 45 seconds.

Although Rust Aide works well, it can be a little harsh on some Metal/Paint surfaces

I recommend a small amount of this product(Much Cheeper) mixed with a few drops of water (like Paste) then spread on the rust stain with your finger tip. Rinse and be done with it............

I have one stern eye that leaks rust, of course its the one behind the baitwell-no clue how to get at it. I tried comet in a paste before longpoint with marginal success. toilet bowl cleaner works best for me but keep it off the metal.

We have used Iron Out to take care of rust stains in toilets, etc. We're on a well and the water has a particularly high iron content. While we use a water treatment system for all incoming water, occasionally the water table rises or something dislodging rust deposits in the bedrock and the water pickups elevated levels of iron as it travels down from the mountains in NH.

Anyway, this stuff reacts chemically with the metal ions and comes out of solution in the form of a very dark flake. Then it can be just flushed/rinsed away. You shouldn't need much. It smells something like rotten eggs and I wouldn't leave it on my hands for any period of time. Make up a small solution, dip a paper towel and then lay it on the stain. Give it a little bit of time, remove the towel and flush with fresh water.

Good luck.

Ok, found a product called "Rust Away" in the marine store. It's a liquid that you brush on, let sit for about 5 minutes then rinse off. It worked well- stains gone. I had tried BarKeepers Friend a while back for a stern lifting eye stain and it didn't work. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Most any aluminum wheel cleaners paired with a tooth brush should do it. Otherwise on/off Mary Kate found at West Marine. Don't breath it!
