BIG barnacle bloom in my canal ( South Shore Long Island ) - anyone having this problem ?
I have never seen it this bad. Thousands of little guys sticking to everything not painted, i.e. transducer and cable, trim tab pistons, any pc of stainless or plastic... I have cleaned them off 3 x in (2) months. Aside from painting EVERYTHING under the water line, is there a simpler way to avoid them and remove them ? My knuckles are chop-meat. The scuba mask, clam knife and 45 minutes of labor are the best solution I've come up with so far... |

I have heard of guys using Anhydrous Lanolin (pure lanolin) to protect running gear on their sailboats, etc. Will probably work/help with trim tab rams, swim platform brackets, etc. that are in the water at rest, but are out of the water when on plane. Some have reported decent results using it on depth transduces and outdrives as well. A friend of mine used it on his running gear on a Hans Christian 43 when he cruised it in the carribean.
You should look on the interent or talk to your pharmacy. For this use is does not need to be Pharma grade purity, of course. Good Luck.

abl1111,
Don't feel bad. When I was in High School I had a physics teacher who mentioned that barnicles secrete an adhesive substance which humans had not been able to formulate a product to break it down for easy removal. I am not aware of anything that has accomplished it yet, either. The person who does come up with a product to break it down will be a billionaire pretty quick given the amount of money and extra fuel costs merchant marine companies spend on fuel, drydock for barnicle removal and lost shipping time. We're talking BIG, Big bucks.
