I am looking to find a 20' ma/sf to restore in the next couple of years. My dad will retire in 3 years and would like to restore a boat with him to possibly have done when he retires. If not we could finish it then. I am not in a hurry. I would like to do a complete tear down to the stringers and close the transom in. How much should I be able to pick up a hull for? Or a better question is how much is too much for a 20 hull that you are going to strip down to bare bones? Thanks for your help. This is a great site.

i understand the idea behind spending time with your dad on the project, but its economicly better to find the best deal you can on somthing more done, maybe just cosmeticly needing repaires or rigging. but if your set on a bare bones hull, i wouldnt go over $500.00 unless it was on a realy good trailer.

Anything over 1k is too much to spend for a complete tear down. Some will say anything over $500 in todays market.

Thanks for the infomation. I understand the costs of a full gut vs cosmetic restoration, I just think if its something I'm going to do I want to know whats there from the ground up. I'm located in southeast GA.

Let me chime in...if I had to do it all over again I would buy the best hull you can afford. You may think you want to tear down and build up, but from some one who has been there, I would NEVER take on a project of a complete tear down again.
There is so much nice stuff out there that you can modify to your tastes and have fun at doing it and still have a good time with your Dad working on it. IMHO

Ask yourself . . . . would I rather spend every weekend and free night for the next 2 years fishing or grinding fiberglass? If you chose to redo the boat . . . you are making a 2 year + $5,000 - $20,000 commitment . . . the down side of stopping before you finish is a total loss of all time and money spent.

Spending that time with your father is priceless, so if you are up to it find a hull for less than $1000.00, I personly have restored quite a few hulls and and you will never fined another boat that means more to you and your father than one you and your father complete with love sweat and tears, go for it..I am a single father of three with 100% full custody I hope and pray i live to see the day my children post on a fourm as you did wanting to spend this quality time with me doing something i love, you can never put a price on that..good luck

cbboatworks I agree 100%. I'm gonna keep my eye out for a good hull at the right price.
