Jack plate or not??

I have a 20 inch engine and transom. The engine runs strong for a 1990 115hp. The transom on the other hand needs to be redone. I don't want to repower if I don't have to but I'd like to put in a new 25 inch transom. Would a jack plate be a viable solution for me using. 20 inch shaft on a 25 inch transom? Or do I put back in a new 20 inch transom and just put the engine back on as is. I don't want to do a bracket. Also if I did a jack plate I assume I would have to switch to hydrolic steering. The jack plate would be a manual. I don't have a ton of money so I am trying for the best bang for the buck. Thanks for any help.

Most Mercurys of that vintage can be retrofitted with a shaft extention,check with Bigshrimpin,he's knows Mercs well.I don't think you would be able to tilt the engine up with the with the engine on a jackplate 5" below the level of the transom.goodluck

This is the company that makes the kits. It's a spacer, shift shaft extension, drive shaft extension, water tube extension, and longer studs. It's pretty easy to install . . . kinda pricey, but not terrible.

Also, see my similar post and discussion. I wouldnt want to re-do a transom and still keep it low.
