Got back from LA Monday after spending 5 days visiting friends in Thousand Oaks. Weather was incredable . Driving up the coast couldn't hardly find a boat anywhere off shore fishing from Malibu to sana Barbra ? Hard to believe as the water looked calm and blue? What gives?

Most of those guys are fishing around the Channel Islands so your not gonna see them as they're 25 miles or more out. They are out early and get home late. Points west of Santa B and south and west of Malibu are closed preserves.
Huge Halibut in that area in summer but this time of year rockfish tend to be the target up there (Oxnard to Santa B. where water is much colder) and must be taken in less than 300 feet so they hit the shallow structure around the islands. Yellowtail (similar to amberjack) are still being caught outside and maybe some in the local kelp but for the most part, the tuna, yellowtail, and dorado are 100 miles south of LA. Shipping lanes are pretty treacherous up there so not much going on in LA harbor except the near jettys and out near Catalina Is. 20+ miles away' Fishing is still good off San Diego so the LA and OC crowd put in at Dana Point or Newport and head south and/or west. Temp breaks are way outside so most guys are fishing pelagics 10 to 40 miles out. Fishing has been exceptional this year so most guys are broke or in the doghouse as fuel didn't drop under $4/gal til about 3 weeks ago. ![]()

Thanks for the up date I know we're spoiled down here in S. fla . Hard to look at a flat calm sea and have no boats for miles as far out as your eyes could see
