New to the Board; 20' Questions

Hi all,
Great site-I cannot believe all of the information assembled here. I thought I was the only one crazy enough to put one of these back together.

Here is a pic of my 1971 20 "Yellow Belly" that I have replaced the floor on and did some minor transom work. On the floor, I used marine ply, glassed over with epoxy, and then sprayed gelcoat and non-skid for a great, durable finish. Otherwise the boat is in great shape.

Does anyone know if this is the original color? The boat has never had bottom paint on her, and I continue to keep her on a trailer here in RI.

I also want to improve the cockpit draining. Anyone have a good solution for auto draining without filling up the boat when you stop?

I also see a higher transom when I need to repower my 1986 Merc 150. The low transom is a problem in really open water, especially fishing in close for stripers.

I repair fiberglass boats for a living, so I would be happy to help anyone with questions about materials, methods, or the like. We only use West system epoxy in our shop, and gelcoat over the repairs every day. I have seen a lot of posts on this, but rest assured that the method put out by the West Tech weenies works like a charm. I can give people some other specific hints if there is interest.

Welcome to the board and nice boat [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img] . That yellow was an available hull color for SC's back in the '70s. Is it the original color of your particular boat? Hard to tell, but most likely yes. Regarding your re-do, you really should talk with Trayder (Jason Goldfarb), the site admin, he lives in your neck of the woods and has totally redone a '69 20CC. Take a look at his progress in the pictures section of the site. Although they aren't as up to date as the project (we got to see it firtshand this past weekend, very nice!!), the pictures will give you some idea of what to do when the repower and transom issue comes up.

Welcome to the site. There are people doing what you did closer than you think, myself in Newport, JohnR in Warwick, and Tech-Editor Roger Marshall in Jamestown.

I am pretty sure your color is original, and in very nice shape from the look of that picture. Common colors are your yellow, Light Blue, and white.

Draining has been an issue with these boats particularly boats with drains that exit throuh the bottom of the boat. Many deal with it and just add plugs while in use and others have routed the drains out the stern and cover with a Raboud style drain cover.

Glad to have you aboard, wish you found it last week as we just had a SeaCraft gathering in Newport for the Jazz fest.

Glad to hear from you all so close! I was just sailing this last weekend in Newport, so I really missed out! I am sure there were some lovely boats. I am told that I need to come and check out your project 20-many good reports.
