On a 18’ boat with a 140 on the back I used a teliflex cable system. It worked ok but the cables would have to be replaced approx every 4 years either from them breaking or from them getting stiff or rusting from the inside. Yes they are cheaper but not as good especially on 6 cylinder motors.

A hydraulic system is very easy to install. All the new systems consist of a helm & cylinder with just two hoses connecting the two. Nothing is high pressure, just fill the system with oil & turn the steering wheel back & forth to fill the system. Easy. If you shop, you can find a new system for under $500.00 on E-Bay, in this sites classified, ScreamAndFly.com, etc...LoveMySeaCraft

The cost depends on how big your motor is, you may be able to get away with the baystar, if not go with seastar, ebay is a good place to shop.

Get a no "feed back system", that way you can let go of the wheel and it will stay on the heading you set. Teliflex and others have them.
