Questions about a 1987 23' CC
Hi Gents-
I recently sold my 1991 Mako 201 and now have the opportunity to buy a 1987 Secraft 23' CC. The motor is halfway in the grave but the hull looks okay....Anything in particular that I should be aware of with this model? I know Mako's have transom, stringer, floor and gas tank concerns that one needs to check out....does the same apply to the 23' Seacraft. Also, how are most guys handling the original 25" transom? Are you closing it off and adding a bracket (if so, are you running a 25" or 30" shaft) or are you fabricating a more hearty fiberglass motor well to replace the existing factory teak splashboard? Ed I guess I'll start this off...
Welcome to the site first of all. I cannot speak for the specifics of that model, but your on the right track as far as what to look for. If your planning on making this a project boat, as many of us here have, those are all things that can be taken care of with a little sweat equity..(or a pocket full of green stuff). Somewhere there was a thread from a couple of days ago that went in a similar direction. A lot depends on what you want to do with the boat and how far you want to take it. Several guys have replaced decks (I'll be doing that soon) fixed and replaced transoms, gas tanks....well you get the idea. This site is a tremendous source of info. with alot of knowledge and know how....If you get into trouble throw the question up and someone is bound to have info on it for you. Your transom question - that’s something I'm working on right now. I'm seriously considering a bracket that was designed by Bill Potter known as the Seamark Bracket. If you go to the main page and click on links you'll see a link for Hermco (who is a contributor to this site) and you'll see the bracket. I have not seen the bracket in person but have talked with Hermco in some length about this unit. I've also had someone in Fl (I use to work for him on his boat) go talk with D.H. All I can tell you is that my contact told me to go with this bracket if I was going to make this modification to the boat. In other words he was impressed with the bracket. There are alot of brackets on the market but this one (in my eyes ) has it all together. I too have the 25" transom that is 26 years old. This bracket will help distribute the weight of the engine across the entire transom of the boat and not just hang on a small portion of it. Not to mention give the boat some serious floatation something like 400lbs positive buoyancy for the single and close to 900lbs for the twin bracket. Well ... you get the idea. If you go for the boat and want a bracket I would give this one some serious thought. Scott Oh yeah... In the older boats the splashwell had its own zip code....its a swimming pool. ED, I have a 1986 and my transom height is 30.5".
I believe yours will be the same. I think the older SeaCrafts have a 25" height. If you check my post you will see the problem I have with twins and my shafts are 25". A single engine would need a 30" shaft on a 30" transom, but with twins you move them out so I was told because of the v hull 25" shaft are used. Also under 150 hp the only shaft lenght is 20 or 25". I can tell you this if you have a 30" transom you take very little water over the transom. |

Thanks for the warm welcome and all the great information regarding the brackets & transom. I am going to look at the 1987 23' this weekend. I'll let you know how I make out.
As far as repairs are concerned, I work part-time (Saturdays) at a friend's boat restoration shop so I have a base knowledge of restoration projects. As far as anything beyond my skill level, I am sure he would could show me how to do it... One follow-up question, what model year is considered to be the most desired 23' CC and why? |
