Default POWER ON A 23 FOOTER

HA GUYS
I HAVE NOTICED A LOT OF PICTURES OF 23’ WITH ONE 200 HP OUTBOARD ON THE BACK. I WAS WONDERING IF THAT IS ENOUGH POWER ON THE BOAT??? I JUST BOUGHT A 225 YAMAHA AND THOUGHT I WAS ON THE SHY SIDE WITH THE ONE 225. WHEN I BOUGHT MY BOAT IT HAD TWO OLD 200 MERCURY’S ON THE BACK.
I KNOW ON THE NEW SEACRAFTS THEY SAY THE MINIMUM POWER IS 225.

FELLOW SHIP

I for one am not a speed junkie. Here on the cape there is to many people to watch out for[summer time]. Most of them don't know witch way to go.OR know where their going. It's a rare day when we calm waters so speed dosen't matter.
I was told it's better to run an o/b at higher
rpm than to dog it. So small motor high rpm-
lrg. motor low rpm . I'm sure someone will say
bs. That's my story and i'm sticking to it.

Hi Fellow-Ship
Hey when are you coming up to get started on my boat??? What a job your doing... those pics were great!!! you got rid of the infamous splash well!!
Mine came with the 200.....I think, and I emphasize THINK, that I might go with the 250 when that time comes...I want to see what these four strokes have to offer also. I have been on several boats with the smaller 4's (130 hp) and they are pretty neat....

I would have to say that the motor you have, 225, is the one most go with...or at least it seems that way.

Hi Fellow-Ship
The big block 225 and 250's push the 23's CC
very well 45-47 mph and still get out of the
hole ok with 3 people on board. The smaller
block 175-200 hp would be under powered with
2 or 3 people, livewell and full fuel. The local
Seacraft dealer just got the Honda line and is
rigging the 23's with the new 225's. They are
only turning 15" Mirage's, but they must be sweet! I will post some info when I take one
for a few days!

Fellow Ship
Seafari is right on the money. A 200 will push a 23' about 40, a 225 about 45, and a 250 about 47 give or take. I also agree w/ Steve, it is a very rare day when I can open her up. I usually cruise 25-30. However every now and again my wild side comes out and its balls to the wall. I make some very long trips (70 miles on short days, 120 on long days) in a 17' Carolina Skiff for work and usually get beat to death. When I get in my Seacraft, I feel like I can take on anything and feel the need for speed. As far as motors go, I have a Rude 225 ficht and absolutely looooove it. It has plenty of power and is good on gas. Not to rock the boat but IMHO 4 strokes just aren't worth the money. You would have to do a whole lot of riding to just break even for the extra $ of the motor. Stick w/ any of the direct fuel injection motors and you will see as good if not better fuel economy for less $. But to each his own.

HA GUYS THANKS FOR THE INFO. FOR ME I THINK A WENT WITH THE RIGHT MOTOR WHEN I BOUGHT THE NEW 2001 225 HP 30” YAMAHA EFI ENOUGH POWER BUT NOT TO HEAVY OR TO MUCH COST. I CAN’T WEIGHT TO PUT IT ON THE BACK.
HA SEAFAIR THANKS FOR THE BREAKDOWN ON THE SPEED. THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT IT WOULD DO.
HA CROKERLIPS I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ONE THE 4 STROKE MOTORS FOR NOW TO MUCH MONEY, EXTRA 100 LBS, AND NOT ENOUGH TIME ON THE WATER FOR ME TO SPEND EXTRA $4,000 TO DO THEIR TESTING FOR THEM. I THINK IN A YEAR OR TWO 225 HIGH PRESSURE WILL BE OUT AND I THINK THAT MIGHT BE A BETTER GOOD WAY TO GO. BUT FOR NOW THE OLDER TECHNOLOGY IS THE BETTER OF THE BUNCH.
