4Stroke Question
Now that each company in the motor industry is coming out with a large 4stroke engine (200,225, etc.), is it possible that they will figure a way to get the weight down around the same as a 2stroke model. In other words, will a 4stroke 225 ever weigh the same as a 2stroke 225. In a few years everyone will have V6 4strokes on the back of their Seacrafts because 2strokes will eventually die out. Someday I plan to put a bracket and twin 150's on the back of my Seacraft. My only concern is, how much will one of those 150 4strokes weigh (if in fact they come out with one)????

My personal crystal ball suggests that the 4strokes will get lighter - they already have compared to the first ones that came out. Just look at the difference in weight between the Honda 130 that has been around a while and the OMC/Suzuki 140 which is somewhat newer.
Just a matter of how long you want to wait. I'm nearing the March 31 deadline on the Suzuki deal, which means my wait is just about over. |

Well....a 2-thirsty-5 OMC weighed about 375lbs back in the 80's. My 1994 OMC 225 weighs 455. A ficht 225 weighs like 520 and the Yamaha 225 weighs 580 or so. Outboards have become just like the US population over the last 30 years....FAT. Will they get slimmer, maybe but don't count on it. Back in 1975 a 135 OMC weighed about 252lbs w/o PTnT. My Whaler was designed to run that kind of weight. A Honda 90 weighs about 390 yet Whaler claims the hull is designed to handle 410lbs. I run a 350lb Evinzuki 4 stroke 70 on mine and she rides fine. Point of my story is weight is not what ruins transoms, HP is. If you are not sure how she will handle with an extra 1-200lbs on the stern, get a buddy to stand back there.

THe 2 stroke is not going anywhere. I would say the 4 stroke may be the one on its way out. With the DI engines that all the builders are putting out are cleaner and burn less gas then the 4 strokes. Be a HPDI, OptiMax, or DI. Im sure the weights will come down but I can not see them weight being the same. THere are much more parts inside a 4stroke.

I think that four strokes will get lighter but at a price. The new supercharges and turbos and the other tricks can make a 2.6 liter four stoke (mercs new one) and it makes the same hp as the 3.6 liter but do you want that. In theory Honda could use their 1.9 liter four cylinder and get 300 hp out of it. But would you want that on your 32 boston whaler while battling back from the cayons in 12fters.
