I am looking for a Potter built 20' SeaCraft. What do I look for as far as dry rot or soft decks? Any specific area's besides the transom??? Any other typical problem areas? Please answer as soon as possible. Thank you, Jim

most of the boats from the '70's are going to need some work, whether it be cosmetic or major structural. If you walk around on the deck and it seems solid, chances are your main area of concern will be the transom and the fuel tank if it is the original version. Other than that, it's mostly going to be cosmetic with most boats.

About a year or so ago I bought a 74 potter hull 20'. I could tell the transom was shot by the bow it had in it. turns out it was just as bad as i suspected I actually at the time didnt think the floors were that bad because I couldn't feel any real soft spots. The only visible damage to the floor was it was buckled up a little bit in the front. I believe water seeped in through the spider cracks on the surface and then froze in the winter. If your not looking to restore a boat and are just looking to fish it I would say dont even begin to poke around cause Ill bet just about any boat from this era is deffinetly going to need some sort of work if some one didnt already beat you to it.

I dont mind some restoration, I think I found a solid boat. I will have it surveyed before purchase.
How do you like your 20? Jim |
