Value on 1975 Spectre 23'

Need some help from the board. What is considered a good buy for a Spectre with the following condition.

- deck above cuddy, a 4to5 8" diameter places needs to be repaired and reglassed.
- quite a number of chips, dents, holes around deck. no soft spot other than the bolt on hatches for fuel tanks.
- one of the match near splash well is missing.
- Transom does not rock but is leaching. possibly work needed.
- hull is painted, painted is partially peeled. no major damaged other than scratches.
- what i think is a somewhat unrestored 75 model
- twin 140 HP engines, running condition.
- trailer in need of serious work
- boat is in poor condition in my opinion.

transom doesnt rock that test tells nothing do the tap test with a hammer listen to the sound it makes a dull thud shows it is soft and has delamination-dry rot peeling paint means it needs paint it wasn't applied properly deck has a few soft spots in the cuddy so it needs to have the core repaired in those areas a hatch is not too difficult to construct what year are the engines what about fuel system? how much do you want to pay???

assume the transom is bad, this is a 1976 boat after all. good change the transom will need work. the engines are 79's. not sure how much i would pay, the book value if it means anything says it is about $2K.

try 3500 sounds like a fair number huh??

The questions you should be asking yourself:

1) In total, how much money have I got to burn ?

2) Am I going to do the repair work or pay to have it done ?
( Either way, see point #1 ).

3) To what extent do you want the boat 'to be' in terms of structural integrity ( present and continued ) and cosmetic appearance ?

I can tell you from personal experience that it will be much more $ than you think to do a decent re-do. And, if you do it yourself, it is a lot or work ( an older boat, that has not been maintained correctly will have a lot of delam. and core rot ).

The initial price is the least important thing in the end, although right now it seems like it is the most important. Re-read that.

I re-did a '75 Tsunami ( same as the Sceptre ) myself - and mine was a perfect candidate for a resto, all original, solid hull, perfect original gelcoat, solid floor ( mostly ). Bought it for $3500 w/ (2) shot i/o's, shot transom; basically re-fit the whole boat. It's a lot of work. Looking back, it was such a dedication of time and energy ( w/ rewards too! ) that no one can tell you what it is like because it is different for each person ( job, family, warm weather, workspace, ability, etc..

Bottomline: If you have the $ and skill ( or just more $ )and are up to it, you can have one damn fine boat ! But, I would make sure the hull you are thinking of is worth the work. If so great. If not, wait longer for a better one and then pounce! ( 'cause with the supply and demand of these boats along w/ the networking on this site - you have to act fast ) i.e that beauty in NJ that Trayder's neighbor got.

see my dilemma is this. i think the CC would be the better way to go since the command a better resale value, better helm ride position. thus the unrestored CC might cost a little more but you end up with a better investmend down the road. if you ask me what is my preference? Spectre does have protection from the environment the the CC does not quite offer. Other than that the CC would have everything i need.
