Repower - 4 stroke Yamaha vs Suzuki
Having read many (all) of the posts on repowering, I find myself having a tough time making a decision on a new engine. I am sold on 4 stroke, but torn between Yamaha (115 or 150) and Suzuki (140).
The only thing wrong with the Suzuki I can find, is that parts/serviceablity could be an issue, and that the horsepower may be slightly overstated. I will be running the boat up on Cape Cod (Chatham), where there are limited dealers... I like the Yamaha 150, but am concerned about putting another 60 lbs on a 78 Sceptre with original transom and the impact on the bailing system. The 115 weighs the same as the Suzuki (406 lbs), but here again I give up some HP. From a price point, looks like the 150 is about $1500 -2000 more than the other two. I am making a decision in the next week or so, and thought it might be worth "kicking it around" one more time with "the experts". All comments welcomed.. Thanks. As you probably know, i have the Suzy DF140. I struggled with the same decision, as i am sure many others have. But the bottom line is the $1.5 - 2K more and the added weight of (466 - 420) 46 lbs of Yamaha was the factor. But you do need to consider the diff in HP if it is worth it for you. I have been hearding 10% diff off Suzuki and 10% high on Yamaha, so thats 126HP - 165HP = 40HP!! That adds up, is it true?? Maybe i should of had the dealer dyno the two before i picked?? The great trouble free track record of the DF140, 6 year warr, good price, low weight is tough to beat. I used the diff of $$ for new hydraulic steering and now i can pack on 46 lbs without feeling guilty! The other advice is maybe wait. I heard that Suzuki might be coming out this year with a DF150 & DF175 and pumped out of the same block/weight as the DF140 ... that might be stretching this block? This will help guys that want more ponies at the same weight .... i would be tempted but after others run the possible bugs out for a few years. Not sure where the Suzuki knowledge is coming from on all these comments about the Suzuki 140 vs Yamaha 150, but these are the facts. Dyno Test Suzuki 140 / 138hp , Yamaha 150 / 148hp. Any motor coming from Japan is allowed a 10% differnce in hp +/-. And you can be sure that the 150 Suzuki will not be out of the same block as the 140. The 140 block is already used for it's little sisters the 115, 90. Buy the Suzuki you get the six year warranty, you get a timing chain not a belt. And you save two to three years in fuel. And don't be afraid to use Atlantic Boats, he is the largest Suzuki dealer in the country. PS |

Ended up buying Engine from DF140 from BayRacer Marine in NC. Ended up paying $8699 for engine, gauges, tach, trim guage,volt meter, (alum prop), (engine was $7800). Cost me $177 to ship to Fla, and no tax to boot. I would recomend John to anyone looking at repowering. Now just have to get boat & trailer from Sarasota to Chatham, Ma... It does not sound like shipping is getting cheaper... [img]/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img]

you can't go wrong with the Suzuki mine has 315 hrs on it in the last season and a half with not ever a hicup. NO corrosion and I just changed the water pump and foun NO corrosion too fifteen mins to change the pump they are nice to work on and run awesome.

I am facing the same decision with my 76 20 cc, I am 95% sure I will be buying the suzuki this weekend. Between the weight, price,and 6 yr. warranty it seems like the way to go.I'm from Long Island and have 2 dealers within 6 miles of my house.I've heard great things about the 140 both from people that have it and my local Yamaha Dealer. One thing that might make me delay is that it was just announced today that the ITC threw out Brunswicks dumping claim against Japanese 4 stroke manufacturers. I'm wondering if this might cause prices to come down, does anyone have an opinion on that? Thanks, Blackfin |

I, like you, am leaning towards the Suzi. I think we have till the end of March to get the extra 3 years of warranty. I am going to stretch it out a few more weeks, but don't think I can wait months (years) as my boat has no power right now.
Interesting about the dumping case being thrown out. I don't suspect the Japs were worried anyway.... |

I am going on my 5th season with the DF115 with out a lick of trouble. I have a friend that has twin DF140's on a Mako 25 and he loves them. The boat isn't a speed demon but he cruises at 24+ mph and the boat tops out in the mid 30's. It sipps fuel, he runs a hundred miles out and back, tolls and burns a 100 gals. Now thats hard to beat.
I'd prefer to have a little more snot on my 23SF, so the new's of a DF150 or 175 is very exciting. Even though I have a four stroker on one boat, I have always been a 2 stroke fan due to the weight to HP ratio.

Bought my 2005 Suzuki140 last week had it and all guages, binnalce, prop, and wiring harnesses shipped to me from out of state dealer $8,900 total (includes shipping). I will not have to pay sales tax in FL. Best price I could find locally was higher than my total cost for just the engine. There is considerable price competiton on the motor shop around...a local guy on Florida Sportsman forum indicated he got a pair of 140's with 6 year warranty $15,175 plus $200 to ship them (engines only).
