What the ...?
I just bought a 23' with 2-175 hp Johnsons. The engines are 1996. I ran them in the driveway yesterday. Today there is an 6" oil stain under one of the motors. The oil seems to be coming out of the prop. Any ideas what this may be? Just found it and have not fully investigated the problem.

I'm not an outboard mechanic but I would look under the cowling to be sure the engine oil resivoir is not leaking,if not then I would think the lower unit seals would be the next obvious culprit. The mechanic I use allways checks for fishing line behind the prop when doing a motor service,apparently it can eat up the prop shaft seal.

That sounds like the bearings in the lower unit are shot or maybe the whole lower unit is shot. You will need to have the lower units rebuilt if that is the problem. After about 10 years most lower units will have problems depending on the amount of hrs. are on the motor. Sometimes, “if you are lucy” it could be just 2 cycle oil running down the motor and onto the pavement. First thing to do is determine what type of oil is it.

Good advise above! Next I would drain the lower unit fluid and make sure the fluid is not a "milky" color. That is a sign of water intrusion. Also look at the tip of the lower unit drain screws when you pull them out. They are magnatized. Excessive metal filings attached is a good sign of internal trouble [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Hopefully it is the following It might just be the engines ad fellowship metioned...let me explain I too have 1996 v6 Evinrudes, mine are 225's. They have to be the most reliable engines but they leak so much "blow by" out the exaust hub it is troubling. I have had this "issue" checked by my mechanic and he assures me not to worry. There are a few differnces between your issue and what I am discussing. 1-I have never measured exactly how much oil is spewed out after running them but it is noticible enough to cause me to adress the situation. 2- both my motors do it Also a little trick (unrelated to your issue but useful) I learned, and you may already know, is the 1996 Evinrudes have an advanced start feature. when cold starting the engine, (first time) Hold the key in the choke position for about 8-10 seconds. You will hear a click after this click start the engine. it should fire right up. I was amazed how well it works. |

Thats interesting Trayder. I wonder if my 1999 175 carb. has that feature. My outboard mechanis says thats how you should start most cars as well. Vezo.
